Ab der Jahrhundertwende verbrachte Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) seine Sommerfrische viele Jahre am
Attersee im Salzkammergut. Hier entstand 1904 eine Porträtserie auf einer Rasenf äche vor Bäumen, deren Fotograf
bislang nicht identif ziert wurde, Moriz Nährs Urheberschaft steht zur Diskussion. Das hier angebotene frontale Brust -
bild ist ein Detail einer Aufnahme dieser Serie, das auch als Postkarte abgezogen wurde – überliefert ist ein Autograf
mit Zeilen an seine Mutter. Im vorliegenden, äußerst seltenen Print ist der Fokus auf den konzentrierten Blick des
damals 42-jährigen Malers durch die Aussilberungen in den Randzonen reizvoll gesteigert. Der originale Untersatz-
karton und das Bromsilberpapier belegen die frühe Datierung des Abzuges, der prächtige, zeitgenössische Rahmen in
restauriertem Zustand war vermutlich nicht von Beginn an Teil des Ensembles. Verbreiteter ist das Bildnis aus dem
Jahr 1917, das Moriz Nähr vor dem Atelier des Künstlers in der Hietzinger Feldmühlgasse aufnahm. Es zeigt Klimt
im Alter von 55 Jahren, wurde ein Jahr vor dessen Tod aufgenommen und gilt als seine letzte Porträtaufnahme.
From the turn of the century onwards, Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) spent many years on his summer
holiday at the Attersee in the Salzkammergut. Here, in 1904, he created a series of portraits on a lawn in front of
trees, the photographer of which has not yet been identif ed; Moriz Nähr’s authorship is under discussion. T e frontal
portrait of ered here is a detail of a photograph from this series, which was also printed as a postcard – an autograph
with lines to his mother has survived. In the present, extremely rare print, the focus on the concentrated gaze of the
then 42-year-old painter is charmingly heightened by the silvering out in the marginal zones. T e original backing
board and the bromide silver paper attest to the early dating of the print; the splendid contemporary frame in restored
condition was probably not part of the ensemble from the beginning. More common is the portrait from 1917,
which Moriz Nähr took in front of the artist’s studio in Hietzinger Feldmühlgasse. It shows Klimt at the age of 55,
so it was taken one year before his death, and is considered his last portrait.
